Network for Urine pO2 Measurement in Medicine (UrOxyNet)

First Symposium

On March 14th and 15th, 2026, Prof. Dr. Oliver Thews (Institute of Physiology, University of Halle) hosted and chaired the first ‘UrOxyNet’ Symposium on Urine pO₂ Measurement, a satellite symposium of the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT) in Halle (Saale), Germany.

In attendance to exchange their experiences to date were working groups from the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Germany, the UK, and Belgium, all of which are presently engaged in clinical research projects involving the measurement of urine pO₂ using the OxyLite™ platform by Oxford Optronix Ltd.

Following an introductory overview presentation by Prof. N. Iguchi of Kansai Medical University, Japan, the first session featured presentations on currently ongoing and planned urine pO₂ studies across Europe.

Session two encompassed an exchange of technical experiences and data analysis approaches. It is hoped that the on-going discussions pertaining to data evaluation and interpretation will lead to a unified statistical analysis approach.

In the third and final session of the conference, opportunities for international collaboration, funding and joint projects were explored.

The symposium took place in a relaxed and open atmosphere where constructive discussions took centre stage. Supported by an informal social gathering on the evening of March 14th, the conference was rated a great success with positive feedback by all participants.

Plans are underway to hold further UrOxyNet symposia aimed at deepening collaboration and refining data analysis strategies across the working groups.
